In the Season 5 finale of House of Cards, LeAnn Harvey’s fate is something of an open question. So what happened to LeAnn in Chapter 65? Was she killed, and if so, by whom?
Though we don’t see a body, it’s implied in Chapter 65 that LeAnn Harvey is dead. Harvey is driven off the road towards the end of the episode, with the scene cutting away just as the lights of the car behind her flash. Frank Underwood had been watching Harvey’s death from his computer, but he turns it off, saying, “Sometimes you don’t have to watch the whole movie to know how it ends.”
Later, we see a shot of a car flipped over; this is Harvey’s vehicle, and the viewer is meant to interpret from this that she is dead.
So who was responsible for this? The show doesn’t directly spell it out, but it’s likely that Mark Usher arranged it. During a conversation with Frank Underwood about 37 minutes into the episode, Usher shows Frank a file, saying, “Both Special Forces. Former. They know how to forget, so you don’t have to worry about them.” Frank then asks Usher what he did with the body, and Usher says, “It’s on ice.”
When we first watch this scene, we assume that they are talking about the body of Tom Yates. But in retrospect, it’s possible they were actually talking about LeAnne Harvey, and the scenes were shown to us out of order in order to mislead us. Even if they were talking about Yates, Usher has been established as the guy who helps the Underwoods dispose of bodies, and so he almost certainly was involved in the disposal of LeAnne Harvey, too. And the fact that Frank Underwood was watching the crash on his computer confirms the fact that he was in on it.
So why was Harvey killed? Simply put, she knew too much about the Underwoods. After all, she was involved in the Underwoods’ decision to use domestic surveillance to spy on Americans in order to gain an advantage in the 2016 election, as well as the plot to manufacture a terrorist scare in order to suppress votes on Election Day. Harvey can be added to the growing list of people that the Underwoods have murdered in order to silence; that list also includes Zoe Barnes and Tom Yates.
That all being said, it’s sort of a television rule that if you don’t see a body, there’s a good chance that the person is not truly dead. So although we are meant to believe that LeAnn Harvey has been killed, there’s a pretty significant chance that she will re-emerge next season in order to cause trouble for the Underwoods.
