The second episode of the new season of House of Cards features a Harambe meme.
In Chapter 54 of the show, the character of Aidan Macallan sets out on a mission to delete some files that would be damaging to the Underwoods, and he does so by letting hackers temporarily invade a switching center in Washington, D.C.
About 33 minutes into the episode, Macallan is seen sending a Pasterbox link on his phone. That link is “http://pasterbox.net/4h4rAMb3.”
This goes by fast enough that most viewers probably won’t even think to read the hyperlink, but the end part of it reads “4h4rAMb3.” In “leetspeak,” this would stand for “For Harambe,” with the first number four signifying “for,” the second number four signifying the letter A, and the number three signifying the letter E.
Harambe, of course, is the gorilla who was killed at the Cincinnati Zoo in 2016, and it has become a popular Internet meme to make fun of the over-the-top hysterical reaction to Harambe’s death. As part of the meme, people frequently say that they’re doing things “for Harambe,” as in in memory of him, and so this explains the House of Cards Easter Egg.
House of Cards is not a show that generally utilizes a lot of Easter Eggs, let alone Internet references, which is part of the reason it was surprising to see a random Harambe joke suddenly popping up in the fifth season’s second episode.
Season 5 of House of Cards is currently streaming on Netflix.
