Social media, whether it’s Twitter or Instagram, definitely has it’s advantages if you’re a professional athlete. You’re able to speak directly to fans, get your voice out there and control the message when it comes to things like your contract status and/or beef with a teammate. It’s an exciting development for both fans and players alike.

Of course, as is the case with anything new and fun, there are pitfalls, specifically, pesky tweets from the past that have a penchant to come back and bite a person in the behind. The latest example of an old tweet rearing it’s head at an inopportune time comes from new Cleveland Cavalier Isaiah Thomas, who was traded to the team by the Boston Celtics Tuesday evening.

So let’s provide some context here, because that’s helpful.

On May 23, 2010, when Thomas sent out the tweet in question, the LeBron James-led Cavaliers had just been eliminated from the playoffs in the Eastern Conference Semifinals by the Boston Celtics, losing 94-85. James had a less than stellar game by his standards. Finishing with 27 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists, James went just 8-for-21 shooting. The lasting image from the game was a dejected and defeated James walking into the tunnel, ripping off his Cavs’ jersey in the process.

Thomas was a across the country in Washington, where he was a student at the University of Washington. He was a west coast kid, so you can’t fault him for being a Kobe-loyalist. He was also psychic because he was right – James was “out,” on his way to join the Miami Heat later that summer.

Things were already going to be a little awkward when the time came for Thomas and James to meet as teammates, given the bad blood between Thomas’ former team and the Cavs. Why not add some added awkwardness thanks to an old tweet?
