Naval Air Station Whidbey Island on Lockdown, Reports of ‘Active Shooter’ on Base

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) in Washington has been on lockdown since before 6 a.m. Reports of an active shooter have been mentioned on social media, but there has not been any public confirmation from the base at this time.

The photo about shows a line of cars outside of one of the gates at the naval base. People have not been allowed on or off the base for about three hours now.

Moments ago, the base’s official Twitter account sent out the following message.

“All NAS Whidbey Island gates on to Ault Field will be closed until further notice. We will update as the situation changes.”

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Ault Field is located about three miles north of Oak Harbor. According to Military.com, NASWI is “the home of all Navy tactical electronic attack squadrons flying the EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler.”

The base has not shared any additional information about what’s going on. Robin Dich with Q13 Fox posted the following update on Twitter after speaking with NASWI’s public affairs office.

“They are looking into reports of possible gunfire around 5am. No evidence has been found so far. No injuries. Air base still on lockdown, but they plan on reopening as soon as possible.”
