John Cena is about to make his return to SmackDown Live. It’s been three months since Cena was on WWE television, and the last thing we saw him do was propose to his real-life girlfriend, Nikki Bella. So three months later, what do we know about the wedding between John Cena and Nikki Bella?
Here’s everything we’ve learned about the engagement of John Cena and Nikki Bella since WrestleMania 33.
1. Bella Says the Wedding Planning Is In the ‘Beginning Stages’ & No Date Has Been Set
John Cena and Nikki Bella have not yet set a date for the wedding. Bella said in June 2017 that the planning is still in the beginning stages but that the wedding will likely take place sometime in the next year.
“Definitely a year,” Bella told E! News. “I can’t wait too long. He might run off! I’ve got to lock him in…I’m in very much the beginning stages.”
Bella went on to say that even three months later, she’s shocked that Cena proposed, and so she’s still absorbing this whole thing.
“I think I’m just so shocked still that he proposed and just enjoying being engaged that I’m just soaking it in,” she told E! News.
In late May, Bella characterized the wedding process as going slowly, saying that she hasn’t picked a dress yet.
“I’ve looked at wedding planners, but that’s it,” Bella told PEOPLE. “We haven’t set a date. We haven’t picked a dress. I haven’t done any of that. So the planning is going slow, but that’s okay.”
And she told US Magazine earlier that month, “[It’s] slow. I don’t really know anything yet. I have a wedding planner. That’s about it. That’s my first step.”
2. Bella Says She Wants a Wedding Dress Reminiscent of Grace Kelly
Although Nikki Bella has not yet picked out a specific wedding dress, she has revealed her inspiration: Grace Kelly.
“I’m very much inspired by Grace Kelly’s look,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I feel like I can always be sexy, but there’s something about having elegance and class, and that’s kind of what I’m looking for. I’m just so drawn for some reason to long sleeves lately. I think I might have to have a little cleavage, but I keep going back to her wedding photos.”
Bella went on to say, “I feel like I’m very drawn towards lace. I don’t want anything too big and princess — I’m so bad with it all — I really like open backs. I don’t want too much boobs, even though I’m the queen of too much boobs. On my wedding day, I just want to hide them. You know, nana’s in the audience, let’s chill out.”
3. Bella Says She Wants to Invite About 150 Guests
Bella has said that she wants the wedding to be “medium” sized, meaning she wants to invite about 150 guests.
“I want like, [a] medium [wedding],” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I envision, like, a 150 people, ’cause I still want to keep it very private and intimate, and my side of the family makes it like 150.”
She went on to say that she wants it to be a black tie event.
“I want black tie. I just love the elegance of black tie, and depending on what season we get married, [there] will be, like, florals,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “Like, I’m going to have a lot of florals, so I don’t know how much they’ll cost, but I hear they cost a lot. But I don’t care. I want it to be drenched with flowers.”
4. Cena Says He’s In Charge of Staying on Budget
So what is John Cena’s role in planning the wedding? Well, he says that it’s his job to make sure they don’t go over budget.
“I’m kind of in charge of the budget,” Cena told E! News. “So we’re gonna keep everything on dollar, or there will probably be some leeway. But I just want the event to be fun.”
Cena went on to reiterate that he’s going to try to keep everything on the dollar but joking that this probably won’t happen.
In addition, Cena said that he knows how important the wedding is for Nikki, although it’s important for him too.
“I know how important the day is to her, and that’s not to say that it’s not important to me. It’s very important to me,” he told E! News. “But I want it to be something that [Nikki will] remember for the rest of [her] life.”
5. The Wedding Will Likely Be Documented on ‘Total Bellas’
It would be surprising if John Cena and Nikki Bella’s wedding was not filmed for Total Bellas, considering how much of Cena and Bella’s relationship has played out in that show and on the other E! reality series, Total Divas.
When asked specifically about whether the wedding will be televised, Bella left the possibility open, telling Entertainment Tonight, “You know, I feel like we’ve brought everyone on this journey.”
However, Bella and Cena have said they have no plans to have the wedding take place on a WWE program like SmackDown Live, with Cena telling E! Online, “The WWE got their moment. Everybody knows that a WWE wedding, nothing really goes right. So, we had a great moment at WrestleMania, I think we’re going to leave it at that.”
Assuming the wedding is documented on Total Divas, it wouldn’t air until Season 3. The upcoming second season airs in September 2017, and this one will focus largely on Brie Bella’s pregnancy; she recently gave birth to a child with her husband Daniel Bryan.
