GameCube Adapter

The 4.0.0 update brought a bunch of useful features for the Nintendo Switch, but people recently discovered that the update enables you to play Nintendo Switch games with a GameCube controller.

You see the update gave players the ability to use USB controllers with the Switch. Since the Wii U GameCube controller adapter made for the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U just so happens to have a USB chord, you can use it with the Nintendo Switch.

All you need to do is plug it into the dock of the Switch, head to the controller settings page from the main menu, and press L+R as you normally would.

As you can see in YouTuber GameXplain’s video above, you can play games like Fire Emblem Warriors pretty comfortably with a GameCube controller once you get used to the different button layout. The only problems are that there’s only one Z button and only one start button instead of – and + buttons. This means that you can’t access certain functions such as the list from the map menu in Fire Emblem Warriors.

But it still works and has a lot of potential. Many people swear that Super Smash Bros. is meant to be played with a GameCube controller, so that functionality would be perfect for the inevitable Smash Bros. game on the Switch. You can even use it for the long requested GameCube games for the Virtual Console, as GameXplain suggested. Of course, Nintendo should release a new GameCube controller with an extra Z button as well as + and – buttons.

GameXplain also tested a wired Xbox 360 controller on the switch, but that wasn’t compatible.

Players have also found that the Switch can also detect wireless headsets so long as they’re connected over USB, according to Polygon.

The 4.0.0 update on October 18 also added video capturing for select games by holding down the capture button. It also allowed you to transfer user and save data to another system and pre-purchase games from the Nintendo eShop. The update also threw in some extra user icons based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and the upcoming Super Mario Odyssey. If the update didn’t happen automatically for you, then all you need to do is manually start the update from the System Settings menu.
